My house hates me. In the last two months, I have chronicled just some of the ways it has tried to bring me to my knees-leaks, secret mold, uncooperative plumbing, a sliding door that won't, more leaks, the mystery spot, the jet engine masquerading as a heat pump, the jet engine masquerading as an exhaust fan, but Wednesday evening it lashed out again!
To set the stage. Wednesday followed Tuesday night, a night of wind and snow and ice. Luckily, none of us had to go out anywhere-schools were closed and John had a day off, as he would be working Saturday. So we settled into snow mode-the boys went out to shovel the driveway to their usual straight edged, perfectly clean post-storm standards, while I stayed inside putzing. One of the cats had lost his dinner on top of our down comforter, so I tried to rectify that little (okay-big) mess and then made tea and answered emails. Mid-morning I remembered the 2.5 pork loin reposing in the freezer. A quick check showed 10 pounds of yukon gold potatoes in the bin, 2 pounds of sauerkraut in the fridge, and nasty cold day without. The perfect day for pork and sauerkraut. Pulled the pork out to defrost, announced the dinner menu (Andrew instantly requested the leftover chicken and pasta in the fridge) and climbed up to unearth the huge casserole from the highest shelf. Everyone happy.
Round about 3 pm, I pulled out the heavy skillet to brown the pork before plunging it into its sauerkraut spa for the 3 hour treatment en oven. Put the oven on to preheat and went to the pantry to pull out the brown sugar. An odd grinding buzz, followed by a loud pop and sizzle came from the oven. As I swung around, the oven was filled with a blindingly bright light. It was on fire. A slow-moving fire that was working its way along the lower heating element, but a fire, none the less.
A quick call to the appliance dealer led me to throw the breaker, which put out the fire. This is the same appliance dealer who sent a rather curmudgeonly repair man just TWO WEEKS AGO to repair the broiler in same oven. For the second time in 8 years. I'm all ready over $400 into repairs for this stupid oven-and now will be over the replacement price. And since the part wasn't in stock, they won't be able to fix it for at least a week!
My house hates me.
